Elizabeth Walker: Naturism’s Ambassador

Elizabeth Walker the nudist

Many of those who posed in naturist resorts for photographers were professional models rather than genuine naturists. One of the handful to buck that trend was Elizabeth Walker, née Elcoate Gilbert, who was routinely described as Naturism’s Ambassador. She was a member of Spielplatz and as early as 1950 and regularly featured in magazines such as Health and Efficiency and The Naturist.

In 1955 she met former RAF pilot Edward Craven Walker at Spileplatz. Craven Walker found fame and riches as the inventor of the lava lamp, but he was also something of an evangelist for the naturist movement. Not only did he set up his own nudist camp near Ringwood in Hampshire, called the Bournemouth and District Outdoor Club, he also directed and produced three films on naturism under the pseudonym Michael Keatering. The films were Travelling Light (1959), Sunswept (1961) and Eves on Skis (1963).

This photo is by Bertram Park at his home in Pinner. With his wife Yvonne Gregory, Bertram produced a number of photographic books of the female nude such as The Beauty of the Female Form (1934) and Sun Bathers (1935). In an earlier post of mine called Spring Shower, you can see Elizabeth Walker posing with Pamela Green.

  1. This picture shows naturism at its best and why the shaved look is best. It is just a beautiful picture.

  2. Beautiful picture. There is something really artistic about these pictures from the 1950s in their uninhibited display of the shaved nude.
